《荷包里的单人床》在2000年版中，张小娴专门就这个文坛公案作了澄清。序中说，小说完成于1997年5月，讲的是一个暗恋的故事，封面那段话是借书中主人公苏盈之口说的。
原文是：“‘世界上最遥远的距离，不是生与死的距离，不是天各一方，而是，我就站在你面前，你却不知道我爱你’。
张小娴在序中说：别人都以为我是抄泰戈尔的，只有我和我的出版社知道我没有抄，这真是世界上最遥远的距离。世界上最遥远的距离，出自印度著名诗人泰戈尔诗集——《飞鸟集》。
